The Future of Human Connection

Diego Borjas’ WP3: Spectrum Reflection goes through a series of reflection of how meditation has helped him as an individual beginning after a breakup. This led me to think about how powerful breakups are. You put your all into someone and all of a sudden, the “world [you] had grown accustomed to, suddenly flipped upside down”. I personally have been on both ends of a breakup and neither is fun. To see how big of an impact two people can have on one another is astounding. Human connection truly is the thing that is the most vital thing for humans to flourish in the world.

My religion teacher in high school used to make us start the class but giving 5 physical affirmations either in the form of a handshake or a hug, which seems disturbingly unsanitary now, but was very impactful at the time. She said there was a study that proves 5 positive touches a day will improve a person’s mood. Now that the world actually is upside down and touching has been almost sinful during the pandemic, I wonder how big of an impact human connection will have.We have spent the last 13 months trying to find other ways to bring us joy and destroy our need for physical touch with alternative actions; how will the world look moving forward? Will we have adjusted after a year and no longer have the same devastated reaction when it is stripped from us, or will we need it more than ever before?
